Tehri/Dehradun. A media delegation from Odisha today visited THDC India Limited (THDCIL) at Tehri as part of a four-day media tour to Uttarakhand organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Bhubaneswar, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.
The delegation was warmly welcomed and briefed by M.K. Singh, Chief General Manager, THDC, Tehri who provided an overview of the organisation’s activities and highlighted the significance of the Tehri Hydro Power Complex in India’s hydropower sector.
During the visit, the delegation was informed about the importance of the Tehri Dam, one of India’s most significant hydroelectric projects. Built at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangna rivers, the Tehri Dam is the highest earthen rock-filled dam in India, with a height of about 260.5 metres. The project was initially conceived in 1949, and construction gained momentum in the 1980s with technical and financial cooperation between India and the then USSR.
Officials informed that the Tehri Hydro Power Complex comprises Tehri Dam & Hydro Power Plant (1000 MW), Koteshwar Dam & Hydro Power Plant (400 MW) and the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (1000 MW), taking the total installed capacity to 2400 MW. Apart from power generation, the project also plays a crucial role in flood moderation, irrigation and drinking water supply to several regions, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
As part of the visit, the delegation toured the THDC Tehri Museum, where they learned about the history, planning and development of the Tehri Dam project through photographs, models and exhibits highlighting its engineering and developmental significance.
The journalists also visited the Hydro Power Plant (HPP) where they were made aware of the process of hydroelectric power generation and the functioning of the plant.
Mohan Singh Sirswal, DGM (HR), and Manbeer Singh Negi, Manager (PRO), THDC, Tehri, along with Sanjeev Sundriyal, Assistant Director, PIB Dehradun, were also present during the visit. The media delegation comprises nine senior journalists from Odisha and is accompanied by Mahendra Jena, Assistant Director, and Bikash Ranjan Dalai, Information Assistant, PIB Bhubaneswar.
